OMNOVA Wallcovering and LEED.
Under the auspices of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), the LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System™ was created to establish a voluntary, consensus-based standard that encourages, supports and certifies successful green building design, construction and operations. By providing a nationally recognized certification system, LEED promotes the adoption of integrated, whole-building design practices throughout the building industry.
LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing and rating a building's performance in five key areas of human and environmental health:
- sustainable site development
- water savings
- energy efficiency
- materials selection
- indoor environmental quality
Because it takes a whole-building approach to construction projects, neither LEED — nor the USGBC — certifies, endorses or promotes specific products, services or companies. As a result, no individual product can guarantee a specific number of credits or points towards LEED certification.
Supporting LEED
Despite the fact that individual products cannot be LEED certified or accumulate LEED points on their own, all three OMNOVA wallcovering constructions — our original vinyl-based products as well as those featuring our new ECORE™ Advanced Wall Technology and RECORE™ Recycled Wall Technology — can be effectively used in LEED projects involving both New Construction (NC) and Commercial Interiors (CI) to help earn credits in several ways.

See below for a full description of each LEED credit. |
All OMNOVA commercial wallcovering products may contribute to LEED points in the following categories:
Category: Materials & Resources:
MR 5.1: Regional Material
Credits earned through the use of building materials (20% of the total project material costs) that have been manufactured within 500 miles of the project site. A significant number of the nation's largest metropolitan areas fall within a 500 mile radius of OMNOVA's wallcovering manufacturing site in Columbus, MS (see map).

Category: Environmental Quality:
EQ 4.1: Low Emitting Materials: Adhesives and Sealants.
Credits earned when wallcoverings are installed using low-emitting primers and adhesives.
Category: Materials & Resources:
MR 2.1: Construction Waste Management/ Divert 50% from landfill. Applies to Commercial Interiors (CI) projects only.
Category: Materials & Resources:
MR 2.2: Construction Waste Management/ Divert 75% from landfill. Applies to Commercial Interiors (CI) projects only.
Credits earned when construction materials — either during initial installation or during later refurbishment — can be diverted from landfill disposal through recycling — which includes wallcoverings featuring either RECORE or ECORE technologies which both can be recycled through the OMNOVA Wallcovering Reclamation Program.

OMNOVA wallcoverings featuring RECORE Technology may contribute to LEED points in the following additional categories:
Category: Materials & Resources:
MR 4.1: Recycled Content, 10% (post-consumer + 1/2 pre-consumer).
As required by the LEED standard, wallcoverings with RECORE include 30% recycled content, including a minimum of 20% post-consumer recycled content in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission document, Guides for the Use of Environmental Marketing Claims, and therefore can contribute to this credit, which is worth one point.
Category: Materials & Resources:
MR 4.2: Recycled Content, 20% (post-consumer + 1/2 pre-consumer).
As required by the LEED standard, wallcoverings with RECORE include 30% recycled content, including a minimum of 20% post-consumer recycled content in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission document, Guides for the Use of Environmental Marketing Claims, and therefore can contribute to this credit, which is worth one point in addition to M.R. Credit 4.1.
